Who are you and where do you come from?

My name is Katerina Fatupaito from the villages of Faleū Manono, Alamagoto, Tanugamanono, and Vailima. Born in Auckland, raised in Whangarei. Shaped by my Pacific roots and the vibrant life of South Auckland. Over 10 years in the fitness industry, but long before fitness, I was and still am part of the arts industry. Acting, performing, and being involved in creative projects.

What does Papatoetoe mean to you?

To me, Papatoetoe is not just a suburb - it’s home. It has been the backdrop for both sides of my journey. It’s where cultures come together, where families grow. I learned to embrace who I am, to serve others, and to keep growing – in movement, in expression, and in community.

How long have you been part of the Papatoetoe community, and how has it shaped you?

I have been part of the Papatoetoe community for 30 years, and it has shaped me by embracing diversity, taught me the value of hard work, staying open-minded, and being proud of who I am.

Can you share a brief story or moment that captures your experience in Papatoetoe?

One moment that truly captures the spirit of Papatoetoe for me is the Christmas Santa Parade. It’s a celebration of culture, color, and community. The vibrant floats, cultural dances, music, and local businesses create a buzz and energy, bringing everyone together. What makes it even more special is sharing those moments with my niece, and she absolutely loves it. Seeing children involved – performing, waving, and dressed up – creates a beautiful atmosphere for families.

What’s a quote, saying, or piece of advice that represents who you are?

A special someone once told me many years ago, “You are your brand” - and I’ve carried that with me ever since. To me, it means being intentional about how I show up, in business and in life. It’s about owning my identity, living with purpose, and not getting distracted by what others are doing.

Whether I’m coaching, creating, or just having honest conversations, I remind myself: my journey doesn’t need comparison - it just needs truth. And that’s what I strive to bring into everything I do.

What drives you or gives you purpose in life?

What drives me is living a full, purposeful life through service, connection, and sharing what I know. I am grateful every day for the ability to move, to serve, and to leave something meaningful behind.

Is there something you’re most proud of in your life or journey so far?

I am proud of so many things – each chapter of my life has had its own triumphs. I’ve competed in fitness competitions that pushed me beyond my limits, emceed a few events where I learned new things about myself and learned to hold space, taken part in some theatre & screen projects that celebrated the strength and spirit of Pacific Women, and made long-lasting friendships and relationships along the way.

But one of the things I’m most proud of is simply reaching 50 years and doing what I love so far - I feel I’m still standing, and still finding new ways to express who I am even at this age.

I feel I’m not finished yet - there is still fire in the belly ha!

Can you tell us about your business, mahi or community role?

My community role is a fitness coach at BFT Papatoetoe (Body Fit Training), and my role is more than just training; it’s about empowering people to move with confidence, build strength, and feel good, comfortable, and confident in their own skin.

Outside of fitness, I’ve also been involved in creative projects and acting roles that celebrate culture, storytelling, and the strength of women. That creative side brings balance to my life and gives me another way to express who I am and connect with others.

How do you see your role contributing to the wider Papatoetoe community

In a community like Papatoetoe, where we’re surrounded by tempting food options and busy lifestyles, my role as a fitness coach is to bring balance. I’m here to educate, encourage, and empower people to make wiser health choices – not through judgment, but through awareness and support.

Fitness isn’t just about aesthetics - it’s about longevity, energy, and the ability to keep showing up for ourselves and our families. If I can help even a few people move better, feel stronger, and live longer, then I know I’m making an impact in our wider Papatoetoe community.

How can people support you or connect with what you do?

The easiest way to connect is through our BFT Papatoetoe socials – follow, message, or even drop by a class. But beyond that, support also looks like sharing conversations around movement, midlife health & well-being in our community.

Whether you join a session, invite someone who needs a boost, or collaborate on something that uplifts others - it all helps. I’m always open to connecting with people who value health, growth, and making a positive impact in Papatoetoe and beyond.

What makes our community special? What makes it uniquely ‘Pap’?

Papatoetoe is special because it has everything in one spot. Food, fashion, culture, and community. From vibrant Indian clothing stores to island takeaways, from discount shops to new homes being built - it reflects real life, real hustle, and real heart. All cultures living side by side. You’ll hear different languages, see generations walking together, and feel a deep sense of belonging. It’s rich in people, pride, and connection. That’s what makes Papatoetoe home.

Thank you to Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board for their support that helps us tell these stories.
